What a centring column really costs an optical store (and the iPhone alternative)

Up to €150 a month, a tablet imposed, a bulky device on the desk: the yearly cost of a centring column, compared with 3D lens centring measurement on iPhone at €4.90 a month.

Every optical store needs reliable fitting measurements for progressive lenses: distance and near pupillary distance, fitting heights, inset. For years the default answer has been a centring column. It works, but it has a price that few owners add up over a full year.

The yearly bill of a centring column

A rented centring column can cost up to €150 per month. Over twelve months that is up to €1,800, before counting what comes with it:

  • a tablet or a computer imposed by the supplier;
  • a bulky device that takes space on the desk or in the fitting area;
  • cables, updates, a contract to renew.

For a store that fits a few progressives a day, that is a significant fixed cost just to measure millimetres.

The camera you already own measures in 3D

Recent iPhones carry a Face ID depth camera: thousands of infrared points that measure real distances, not pixels on a photo. IO-Tech-Vision turns it into a centring tool:

  • distance and near PD, fitting heights to 0.1 mm, inset and gaze drop;
  • the bevel bottom is detected automatically, with a ×6 magnifier so you can check it yourself;
  • each result is the median of 48 images, with a quality score and a far/near coherence check.

No clip, no ruler on the frame, no extra hardware. The measurement is taken at the desk, between two clients.

The comparison, side by side

  • Monthly cost (excl. VAT): up to €150 for a column, €4.90 on iPhone.
  • Yearly cost (excl. VAT): up to €1,800 for a column, €58.80 on iPhone (or €245 one-off for 3 years).
  • Hardware: column plus imposed tablet, versus the iPhone with Face ID you already own.
  • Space needed: a dedicated spot, versus none.

That is up to 30 times cheaper, with the measurement in your pocket.
