Progressive lens fitting: why measure distance and near vision

A progressive is fitted for two postures. Measuring only distance vision leaves half the story out. Here is how 3D measurement on iPhone checks both.

A progressive lens is designed for two postures: looking straight ahead and reading. Yet many fittings rely on a single photo, taken in one position, with a clip to give the scale.

One take is not enough

Distance PD, fitting heights, near PD, inset, gaze descent: each value depends on where the client looks and how he holds his head. A single flat photo doesn't know the distance of the face, and it doesn't show how the eyes converge when reading.

Two takes, one reference

IO-Tech-Vision 3D measurement uses the Face ID (TrueDepth) camera of the iPhone. It places the eyes in 3D, in real millimetres, with no clip and no ruler.

  • Distance vision: the client looks straight ahead. The iPhone reads gravity, so the gaze is truly horizontal. You get the fitting points and heights in the lens plane.
  • Near vision: the client holds the iPhone like a book. You get near PD, inset, gaze descent and reading distance.

Both takes are expressed in the same reference, attached to the face. That makes them comparable.

A built-in consistency check

PD is computed between the eyes' centres of rotation, so it does not depend on the point being looked at. The distance take and the near take must therefore agree. If they don't, the app tells you, and you simply measure again.

Each take is the median of many frames, captured only when head position, distance and open eyes are validated. A quality score accompanies every result.

Data stays with you

Measurements are stored on the iPhone only, encrypted and protected by Face ID.

In practice

  • iPhone with Face ID, iOS 16 or later.
  • €4.90 per month (excl. VAT) or €245 one-off, 3-year licence, 1 iPhone.
  • Included in the Optician pack at €34.90 per month, with augmented reality Vision and the anamnesis.

3D measurement supports your fitting work: your expertise and your checks remain the reference.
